Michael Amrose /Abstract Photography
Influences - Two groups directed and shaped Michael Amrose’s interest in art. Their influence and that of the amazing artists associated with them touched his life, leaving an indelible mark on him both as a person and as an artist.
CEPA Gallery (Center for Exploratory and Perceptual Arts), Buffalo, NY, a center for artistic experimentation included artists such as Cindy Sherman and Ellen Carey. Amrose's experiences at CEPA were highly influential in developing his knowledge and understanding of photography. For the first time, he “saw” the photograph as art and photography as an art form.
Also influential was SUNY at Buffalo, Center for Media Studies where he earned his M.A. in filmmaking. He studied with some of the era’s great documentary (James Blue, Cannes Film Festival’s Critics Prize —1962) and experimental (Paul Sharrits, artist/painter and structural film leader) filmmakers. His photography was seriously impacted by this experience, particularly by James Blue’s creative use of the frame, film structure and film language. Amrose's educational experience and the people at CMS significantly influenced and informed his photography.
Experience - Film school led to five years of freelance scriptwriting in Western NY and Toronto for organizations such as Canadian Tire, NYS Parks Office of Historic Preservation, City of Buffalo, and the United Way. This experience writing actual shooting scripts developed and honed Amrose's filmmaking and photography skills. Also, during this time period he held the position of adjunct professor at SUNY Fredonia where he taught filmmaking.
In 2013 he worked for VASA Project, an online media center where he was a mentor/facilitator in the VASA’s Global Photography Project.
